“Yoga goes hand-in-hand with life coaching,” Barbara declares. “It changed my life hands-down. It taught me to be still and quiet and to just be, instead of always hustling and bustling and living life just go, go, go.”
She started yoga when she began her fashion consultant and life coaching businesses. After observing teaching style of many teachers, started her own practice in 1995 and became a certified instructor in 2008.
Her classes follow the tenets of Power Vinyasa yoga and even though she describes her yoga classes as more challenging than most, she says the routine can be easy enough for anyone.
“You’ll definitely sweat in my classes,” Barbara insists. “It’s more of a flow class where you get the benefits through breathing. I put a lot of emphasis on proper body alignment. That’s what makes it work.”
Barbara leads group lessons around Naples and in-home private sessions for those who see relaxation as the perfect complement for their newly found peace of mind and organized lifestyle.
Dennis Devies,
Yoga StudentHe may be one of a precious few Western men to take yoga seriously, but for Dennis Devies, there’s nothing at all emasculating about his once-a-week classes with Barbara King.
A self-described fitness buff, Dennis said he noticed a lot of pretty women taking a yoga class at his gym and figured it was worth a try – yoga, that is.
“I’ll do anything but spinning,” chuckles the avid golfer and online commodities trader. “I’m pretty much up all night trading with foreign countries so I have to hustle to make Barbara’s 9:30 class. It’s awesome. She really interacts with her students and makes the yoga instruction enjoyable, not as serious as some teachers do.”
Dennis says yoga has taught him flexibility, breathing and meditation, which are sometimes difficult for men blessed with good muscle mass. “Women are more flexible than men so flexibility training is a good thing. And she constantly forces us to breathe,” he said. “I’m a neophyte; I don’t understand all of it, but it helps vary my workout. The combination of cardio and yoga kicks my butt.”
Occasionally his superior upper-body strength gets a nod from his female classmates, as when he’s able to get into and hold a headstand.
“Some people take it easy but if you want it, it’s there to take,” explains Dennis. “I really work at it and it is strenuous. I hate to give up on anything. I’m 57 years old. I can’t let any youngsters show me up.”
